The contemporary drama centers on a female Chicago homicide cop who arrives at a prison to provide transfer for a dangerous criminal she helped put behind bars. Events get in the way of a clean transfer.

Carahan will look to do the film after Mission: Impossible 3, which is gearing up for a 2004 start with Tom Cruise starring and producing.

People actually fly in Lara Croft, Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, which opens this weekend. No cables. No camera tricks. No blue screens.

Just a weird yellow suit with silk sewn in between the legs and along the arms to create wings.

Director Jan De Bont was searching for an original escape scene for the Tomb Raider sequel when he came upon "a little tape of these two crazy Swedish sky divers ... who had done one jump from a mountain" in the wing suits they had designed. "I said, 'Can you guys jump from a building?' "

Croft (Angelina Jolie) and her sidekick, Terry Sheridan (Gerard Butler), reach the top of Hong Kong's Two International Finance Center skyscraper with the bad guys in pursuit. Their stand-ins, jumpers Per Eriksson and Martin Rosen, don the winged suits and jump off the building's 84th floor (1,000 feet high). The pair glide several miles between skyscrapers before they unleash a small parachute to land on a freighter in Victoria Harbor.

Eriksson and Rosen practiced for months and jumped 28 times from the building. There were many unexpected difficulties, De Bont says. For instance, most skydiving scenes are filmed by a third skydiver who wears a camera on his head. But the helmet-cam skydiver weighed significantly more, so he dropped much faster than the jumpers in featherweight flying suits. The crew ended up filming from helicopters � another difficulty, because the slightest wind gust can send the jumpers into an unexpected direction.

Tobey Maguire said that he expects Spider-Man 2 to be a better film than the original

"I know what we're doing and I can't wait to see it," during a spot on MTV's TRL on Tuesday. "It was great putting on the Spider-Man suit again. It was like coming home.

"In my opinion, we're making a better film than the first one."

Kirsten Dunst, who returns as Mary Jane, said she has a new wig this time.

"This one's a lot better one," Dunst said. "So I feel a lot cuter in this one."

"The Adventures of Indiana Jones - The Complete DVD Movie Collection" (order here | read review) has become the fastest-selling DVD movie collection of all time with more than $50 million in retail sales in the U.S. and Canada since its release on Oct. 21.

"There was significant demand for this box set across a very broad consumer base," said Thomas Lesinski, President of Paramount Pictures, Worldwide Home Entertainment. "Sales were so brisk during the first four days that many retailers had a hard time keeping the collection in stock over the weekend."

In its first week, the Indiana Jones DVD collection sold more than 1.1 million units, said Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing and Distribution for Lucasfilm Ltd.

"This is just the beginning of what looks to be a long and very successful run for Indiana Jones at DVD retailers," Ward said. "We couldn't be more pleased about the fantastic sales figures, but probably the best news is that we delivered a collection that lived up to the enormously high expectations that Indiana Jones fans had for this movie collection. We know that Indy is at the top of their holiday gift lists, as well, so we're looking forward to strong results through the end of the year."

Added Ward: "Our top priority was making sure these movies looked and sounded better than ever, so a new generation of fans can discover them for the first time. The reviews are really pleased with the quality of the discs and the bonus materials."

The four-disc set provides viewers with more than 10 hours of entertainment. Disc 1 offers the completely remastered Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. On Disc 2 is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, while Disc 3 offers Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. At The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King premiere in Wellington, New Zealand, director Peter Jackson talked about his upcoming project, King Kong, which he is currently writing with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

Australian actress Naomi Watts has already been tipped as the star and media attention is now turning to those who worked on "The Lord of the Rings". "We don't really know who's going to be in King Kong yet," Jackson said.

"Whether it's King Kong or films in the next 10 or 20 years, I'm hoping that I'm going to be and I'm actually fully intending to try to work with all these people again because they've just been so fantastic."

Like "The Lord of the Rings," King Kong will be shot in New Zealand. The visual effects will again be undertaken by Weta Ltd.

"The Lord of the Rings" executive producer Mark Ordesky hinted that there may also be a movie based on Tolkien's novel, The Hobbit. "There could be a movie about the hobbit. Enough said."

Jackson said New Line Cinema had yet to speak to him about The Hobbit and said there were some difficulties related to the rights for the book. "But certainly if they want to talk to me about it I'd be keen. It would be wonderful to complete the set of films."

After the "The Return of the King" premiere, Jackson will get to work on turning the theatrical movie into an extended DVD version.

USA Network Picks Up The Dead Zone

The Dead Zone, the hit series starring Anthony Michael Hall, has been picked up for a third season, as announced by Jeff Wachtel, executive vice president, series and longform programming, USA Network. The series is set to resume production this Fall.

U Magazine spoke with Tom Cruise about training for The Last Samurai:

To play the Yankee-turned-samurai, Cruise did all the requisite training so he could perform the heavy lifting the film required. He pitched a tent on a tennis court at his house seven months before filming began, enlisted Nick Powell -- who taught Russell Crowe and Mel Gibson their savage sword moves for "Gladiator' and "Braveheart,' respectively -- and went to work. Cruise gained 20 pounds -- most of it went to building muscle in his thighs, forearms and shoulders -- to be able to comfortably wear the samurai armor and wield all the weaponry.

"I knew something was working when I tried putting on one of my suits and couldn't get my arm in the sleeve,' Cruise says, laughing. "Carrying those swords just builds up your forearms beyond belief.'

But he's quick to add that samurai aren't all about fighting, and again goes back to the code -- the loyalty, honor and compassion that the ancient warriors possessed. And as much as people focus on Cruise's physical transformation -- he grew out his hair and did his best to patch together a beard (he jokes those two things alone accounted for five pounds of his weight gain) -- Cruise says the emotional work he devoted to his character was far more strenuous and time-consuming.

Marshall Herskovitz, Zwick's long-time writing and producing partner, backs him up. Herskovitz was a producer on "The Last Samurai' and took a pass at the screenplay last spring after Zwick basically told him to put up or shut up.

Herskovitz believed the movie needed to deepen the relationships between Cruise's soldier and the film's other characters. He wanted more emotional involvement all the way around. His question: Would Cruise want those same things?

"There's always a certain amount of trepidation when you're dealing with someone of Tom's power,' Herskovitz says. "They want what they want, and if they want something that you don't want, it's going to be a difficult situation. And usually what they want comes from some combination of vanity and fear. They want to protect themselves.

"But what I got with Tom is: 'I want to be challenged. I want to do something I've never done before and I think this is the way to do it.' And then he offers these remarkable insights about what makes a character work, things we had never thought of, things that were no less bold from an acting standpoint.

"I think what has happened,' Herskovitz continues, "is that, over the years, Tom has put himself in the hands of people he considers to be masters of the form, whether it's Scorsese or Kubrick, and has quite openly wanted to learn from them. And what's interesting is to see him now coming into his own as a man -- he's 40 years old (actually 41) -- having internalized a lot of this stuff, having a vision that's informed by a lot of what these guys taught him. And it's very sophisticated.'

Cruise won't cop to that, although, like the samurai, actions speak louder than words. He's moving from "The Last Samurai' to playing a contract killer in Michael Mann's new movie, "Collateral,' another left turn for another great director.

"You want to do something that's exciting, and excitement usually comes with risk,' Cruise says. "But that's half the fun of it, I think.'

Just thought I should let you guys know that the new Revolutions poster just came in to my theater. It looks just like the Reloaded holograms ones only it says "Everything That Has A Beginning Has An End." It features the date on the bottom. 11-05.

Also of note is the release of The Matrix Reloaded in IMAX. You may be interested to know that the movie is uncut. Normally an IMAX film has a 2 hour limit due to the size of the film reels. However, the Wachowski's paid to have a bigger reel made so the film wouldn't have to be cut.

Disney Prepares Lafiya

The Walt Disney Co. has hired "The Fighting Temptations" scribe Elizabeth Hunter to pen "Lafiya," an animated feature set in Africa. The exact story line for the project is being kept under wraps, with the only known details being that it is set in Africa and centers on a young female lead character. The studio declined comment on the project. "Lafiya" marks the first animated effort for Hunter, who previously penned the Paramount Pictures comedy "The Fighting Temptations," which is set for a September release. Hunter also wrote "White Boy Shuffle" for Intermedia Films and Overbrook Entertainment. Kevin Sullivan is attached to direct "Shuffle." Hunter is repped by ICM and attorney Alan Wirtheimer. "Phantom" stars stars Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson. Warner Bros will distribute the film in North America while Entertainment Films has U.K. rights.

Lillard, Green & Shepard are Without a Paddle

Matthew Lillard, Seth Green and Punk'd star Dax Shepard and actors are in talks to topline Paramount Pictures' Without a Paddle for director Steven Brill. Production is slated to begin in late September.

The movie is about three lifelong friends who find themselves on a canoe trip in search of a $200,000 treasure. They are unaware of the obstacles in front of them, including a dangerous river and whacked-out mountain men.

The project would reunite Lillard and Green, who are both working on Warner Bros.' Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. Mitch Rouse and Jay Legget rewrote the material. Harris Goldberg and Tom Nursall wrote the original script to the project, which was first rewritten by Fred Wolf.
